Dr. Edwin J. Westfall, music was at core of physician's life
WEST BLOOMFIELD -- As a young boy, Dr. Edwin J. Westfall traveled to railroad stops with his father to play the cornet. His dad formed impromptu bands, and he and his siblings would be the core group. By 17, the future physician was giving music lessons in towns along the Missouri River. He later taught his own son to play.
"Music became a real foundation for the family," said his son, Robert. "All of his kids share his love for music, but not quite the dedication."
Dr. Westfall, an internist, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Beaumont Hospital due to complications after heart bypass surgery. He was 77.
"He was a very compassionate and dedicated individual," Robert Westfall said. "Dedicated to his work, family and medicine."
Music continued to play a big role in Dr. Westfall's life when he entered the University of Nebraska to study medicine. While working toward his degree, he became the cornet soloist for the ROTC band.
After graduating in 1947, he began his residency at Grace Hospital in Detroit, where he met nurse Mary Elisabeth Cartwright. They wed a year later and were married for 53 years.
The couple lived in Munich, Germany, from 1949-55 while Dr. Westfall served in the Army. When they returned to the States, he became one of the original staff doctors at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
"He was very proud of that. He will be remembered for his passion and care of his patients," his son said.
Dr. Westfall retired in 1990, but continued advising the hospital's medical staff as a consultant.
